Experience in China showed the need for a more powerful cartridge than the 6.5 mm. Used in the Type 38 rifle so the Type 99 using the 7.7 mm round was adopted in mid 1939. Shorter than the Type 38 but using essentially the same mechanism and the same bayonet this was an excellent rifle although the anti-aircraft rear sights appear over ambitious. Original Chrysanthemum mark on receiver has been filed off prior to surrender of the weapon (See FTA 155). Wire monopod is missing
