This series comprises maps and plans of the Royal Gunpowder Mills and surrounding areas from 1590

  • The series was originally incorporated in the Waltham Abbey Special Collection (WASC) and the original WASC 900 numbering prefix has been retained. Where WASC appears in Maps and Plans this should be taken as a WAMP number.
  • The maps and plans have been categorised as follows:- Original - In original form. This includes Ordnance Survey maps printed in large format. Master - In a form intended to be employed in producing copies. Copy - In copy form.
  • FMD - Where a maps or plans are in particularly large format or are in fragile condition they have been stored separately in map rolls in the Fragile Map Drawer.
  • Maps and Plans of sites other than Waltham Abbey are listed under 900-501 onward.
  • Missing maps and plans are shown in italics.

This series comprises drawings of the buildings of the Royal Gunpowder Mills from 1840 to 1945

  • The series was originally incorporated in the Waltham Abbey Special Collection (WASC) and the original WASC 901 numbering prefix has been retained. Where WASC appears in Building Drawings this should be taken as a WABD number.
  • Two main building numbering series were employed on site. The first, a straight numerical series was instituted around the beginning of the 20th century. WAMP (Maps and Plans) No 900/84 P17 and 900/85 P18 contain a list of this series. The second was introduced post 1945. This consisted of a numerical series preceded by an alphabetical letter (A,L,S) indicating the site area location. Where applicable, i.e. where a building has a reference from both series, both are stated.
  • It is possible that the function of the building as given in the original drawing title will have changed at a later date.

Description

The Armoury Catalogue is a database, with images and specifications, of the collection of small arms and militaria acquired from Brian Street with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant. The current exhibition was designed by David Kenyon. The Armoury Exhibition displays over 300 historic firearms covering the periods from the English Civil War to present day conflicts.
