Starting in the 1890s Turkey bought a variety of batches of Mauser rifles from Germany, based on the various Mauser designs, in particular the Gew 98. Many of these were originally purchased in 7.6mm calibre. In the 1930s the Turkish arsenal recalled and re-worked all of these weapons to a accept a standard 7.92 x 57 round. With isolation caused by WW2 many were also built fresh from stored parts, or new components were manufactured. Although not an official designation these weapons are widely known as Model 1938 rifles. The precise type, and origin of the various (non-matching) parts of this weapon have been masked by the refurbishment process.
