Adopted in 1933 as the standard pistol of the Red Army. Basically a Soviet version of the Colt-Browning pistols but with alterations to make the pistol easier to produce and maintain under field conditions. An excellent sturdy and reliable pistol which ultimately was used by all satellite countries and other communist countries. Still in use today in many parts of the world.
