Based on earlier S&W 'Military and Police' .38, a very widespread and popular handgun. At outbreak of WW2 many were produced to British specifications, with a heavier 200 grain bullet. 890,000 were made between 1940 and 1946 and issued to all the armed forces, Commonwealth forces and even various European resistance movements. An excellent, robust revolver than remained in service up to the 1960s and is still used by many armies today. Plain mood grips suggest 1942 manufacture
