The last combat sword issued to the British army, this was an excellent design, well balanced and intended to be a thrusting weapon. This example was still being manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory in November 1915. It is interesting to note that the first German casualties inflicted by the British Army were made by soldiers of C Squadron, 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards with a sword of this type on the 22nd August 1914, at the village of Casteau in Belgium.
