The M5 bayonet was a post WW2 design for the M1 Garand rifle. After problems with the locking catch this was redesigned and the weapon redesignated M5A1. Thie example lacks military acceptance stamps so was probably sold direct to the civilian market. The M8A1 scabbard is similar to the WW2 M8 but with the addition of a steel belt attachment fitting to the lengthened web strap.
