Principle SMG of Israeli armed forces. Designed by Major Uziel Gail to satisfy the need for a reliable submachine gun. He studied the various weapons in use in the Middle East, in particular the Czech Model 23. The UZ1 appeared in 1952, a blow back weapon using an over-hung bolt which reduces the length of the gun. The magazine enters the pistol grip. Made of sheet metal stampings the UZI is now used by many armies and law enforcement organisations. Capable of operating under the most arduous conditions the UZI can fire both single shot and fully automatic.
