Another revolver which gave excellent service over many years. Based on a Belgian design the Russians produced the Nagant at Tula Arsenal in 1895 and continued until 1940. It fires a unique 7.62 mm cartridge with a fully recessed bullet to form a gas seal between cylinder and barrel. The Russian Army issued double action revolvers to officers, other ranks had to put up with single action versions. Both types were sturdy and reliable but loading and unloading was slow and very old fashioned. Each round was fed into cylinder via folding gate on the right and a rod was used to eject spent cases one by one.
