The Lee Metford rifle was introduced in British service in 1888, with the Mk II following in 1892. This weapon fired a .303 round but was initially still black powder propelled. In 1903 many of these weapons were rebarrelled to take smokeless powder and were re-designated Rifle, Magazine, Lee, Enfield, MkI. This may have happened to this example.
