The SMLE was the principle weapon of British forces from 1907 to the early part of WW2. (See FTA 133) The Mk III* was a simplified verion of the Mk III lacking the magazine cut-off and volley sight of earlier weapons. These simplifications were introduced as an economy measure in 1916. This exeamnle has arabic markings on breech suggesting overseas use.
